History behind how the EJ-EH Holden Owners of Southern NSW Inc was formed.
Towards the end of 1997 after being a member of the EH Holden Car Club of NSW Inc for the past ten years , Jason O’Leary suggested to his father Clem that he would like to start a local EJ and EH Holden Club as the 1.5 hour drive each way per month to Sydney from their home in Dapto to attend club meetings and even further to attend club runs was getting a bit tiring.
During this time as a member of the EH Holden Car Club of NSW Inc, Jason became friends with Steve Fitness who lived at Albion Park and also travelled to Sydney for meetings and runs.
Jason mentioned to Steve about his idea to start a local EJ and EH Holden Club and asked Steve if he wanted to be part of it and Steve confirmed his interest.
In the late eighties, Jason became friends with Tony Kollard who owned a nice EH Sedan, lived at Balgownie and worked at Wollongong TAFE where Jason attended doing his Fitting and Machining Trade Certificate
Tony and Jason used to do the odd wedding in their EH’s and Jason used to drag Tony along to the EH Holden Car Club of NSW Inc. annual Car Show at Silverwater Park Silverwater each year and eventually Tony also became a member of the EH Holden Car Club of NSW Inc.
Jason worked with Johnny Trunzo from Woonona who owned a nice black EH Sedan and they used to also do weddings together and this is how Jason met Warren Prasser as Johnny Trunzo was the cousin of Warren Prasser’s brother in law John Trunzo. Warren used to come along to the EH Holden Car Club of NSW Inc. annual Car Show at Silverwater Park Silverwater with Tony and Jason and then also became a member of the EH Holden Car Club of NSW Inc.
Jason asked Tony and Warren if they were interested in joining himself and Steve to start this local EJ and EH Holden Club.
After a few meetings at each of their homes towards the end of 1997, the club was formed and called the EJ-EH Holden Owners of Southern NSW Inc with Warren as President, Jason as Secretary, Tony as Treasurer and Steve as Social Co-ordinator.
Jason registered the club name with the DFT and the first club run was planned for the 11/1/1998 at Kevin Walsh Oval Jamberoo. The four guys contacted their friends who were into EJ’s and EH’s and invited them along for a BBQ lunch and get together.
There were seventeen people attend that day who became members and they were: Jason and Clem O’Leary, Warren Prasser, Tony Kollard, Steve Fitness, John Trunzo, David Neil, Chris Atkin, Nick Krout, Anthony Sloane, Jimmy Jordeski, Nikola Sotirovski, Steve Barsdell, Bernie Smilie, Charlie Boniface, Don Peters and Fred Penrose.
We continued having monthly runs gaining more members by word of mouth and friends of friends.
In September of that year we held our first Car Show and Shine on the grounds of the Dapto Public School in conjunction with the Dapto Chamber of Commerce Street Fair which was a great success as we were able to donate $1000 to the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
After a couple of years at Dapto, we moved our Car Show to Ziem’s Park Corrimal in conjunction with the Corrimal Street Fair then moved to Black Beach Kiama in 2003 after we hosted the EH All State Run Show and Shine at the same venue that year.
Over the years our club has donated approx. $30,000 to various local charities, some include the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service, Autism School Corrimal, Corrimal JRLFC, SES, Lifeline, Bush Fire Brigade, Life Education, a young boy suffering from cerebral palsy from West Dapto who needed and new wheelchair, Bendigo Bank Australian Aerial Patrol, Prostrate Cancer Research and many others.
This is one of the main reasons our club was formed as a Non-Profit organisation other than people getting together with similar interests in EJ and EH Holdens, was to contribute to the community and raise money for local charities.
Steve Fitness now lives on a large rural property at Alstonville near the NSW – Qld border and still has his nice white EH Sedan with HOT-064 plates and a stock EH Sedan currently in restoration.
Tony Kollard stills lives in Balgownie but has sold his nice blue EH Sedan but has a nice Tiger Mica EH Ute that he still cruises in.
Jason is now living on the Gold Coast Qld with his family and is a member of the EJ-EH Holden Club of Qld inc whilst still being a member of our club and assisting where required.
Warren still lives at Corrimal and attend club meeting and runs when able to.
